Records of pycnogonids, or sea-spiders, from the waters of Costa Rica are relatively scarce. Including those known ex. litt., only 12 species, representing seven genera and four families, have been of these species are from Pacific waters and only two from Caribbean waters (with no species in common); three are from deepwater and nine from shallow water (including the littoral).

Smithsonian archivist Lesley Parilla, who coordinates the Field Book Project, knows the story of the rise and fall of the Pacific Ocean Biological Survey more intimately than almost anyone else.

She’s archived stacks of handwritten notes from the program scientists, and credits more of the notebooks in her collection to the POBSP than to any. What We Are Studying. The Gulf of Alaska Project tests three main hypotheses about the survival and recruitment of five focal groundfish species, (walleye pollock, Pacific cod, Pacific ocean perch, sablefish and arrowtooth flounder), and the gauntlet they face as they move from offshore spawning areas to nearshore nursery areas during their first year of life.
